Bunionplasty before and after

Bunionplasty® is a minimally invasive bunion surgery that, through revisions and advancements in technique, might be the ideal bunion surgery currently available. It combines advanced surgical techniques with aesthetic considerations, ensuring not only functional correction but also a cosmetically pleasing outcome.

With Bunionplasty, there is minimal pain, minimal incisions, stable fixation, and rapid recovery time. As a bonus, the procedure can correct any size bunion.

It's a testament to the advancements in medical technology and a patient-centric approach to healthcare.

How does Bunionplasty differ from other bunion surgeries?

Bunionplasty is not your standard bunion surgery. Previously, only small bunions could be corrected with minimal scarring because they required only minor bone adjustments. That is not the case with Bunionplasty!

Bunionplasty employs minimally invasive techniques that focus on reducing tissue trauma, which in turn minimizes post-operative pain and speeds up recovery. Here's what makes Bunionplasty stand out:

  • Minimally invasive: Tiny incisions and custom-designed fixation systems lead to less disruption of the soft tissues.
  • Rapid recovery: The gentle approach allows for immediate weight bearing and a rapid return to daily activities.
  • Aesthetic focus: Special attention to incision placement and plastic surgery techniques make the surgical signs barely noticeable.
  • Little to no pain after surgery.

What to expect during the Bunionplasty procedure

At University Foot & Ankle Institute, we know there is no one-size-fits-all approach to bunion correction. The Bunionplasty procedure is tailored to each patient’s specific anatomy and bunion severity. The use of cutting-edge technology ensures precision and optimal outcomes.

Bunionplasty surgery is done at a surgery center under local anesthesia and sedation. No general anesthesia is required, so you remain awake during the procedure. Two to three small incisions less than one centimeter each are used to cut the first metatarsal of the big toe.

The bone can be shifted as far as necessary (which is one of Bunionplasty’s secret techniques), allowing us to correct any size bunion. The bone is then fixated with one to two custom-designed screws, and the incisions are closed. The procedure takes about one hour.

What is the recovery from Bunionplasty?

About one hour following the surgery, the patient can walk out of surgery in a surgical shoe or boot. Putting weight on the foot same-day is allowed. Often, patients have no pain or minor pain that’s manageable with Advil or Tylenol. Pain medication can be given but is not often required.

Patients can return to walking in sneakers six week post-op. After two months, you can fully return to recreational activities.

Bunionplasty FAQs

Bunionplasty FAQs

Who is not an ideal candidate for Bunionplasty bunion removal?

While Buionplasty surgery is ideal for a majority of bunion patients, it is not ideal for very severe bunions and for patients with very loose joints. During your initial consultation, our bunion experts will evaluate the severity of your bunion and determine your best treatment option.

Can I wear high heels after Bunionplasty?

Yes! Two months post-op, you can wear high heels if desired.

How does Bunionplasty compare to Lapidus foot surgery?

Traditional bunion surgery, such as the Lapidus bunionectomy, requires more extensive bone procedures, which means large incisions on the top of the foot to access the bones. The result is a longer recovery and more scarring.

Who is the best bunion surgeon in Los Angeles for the Bunionplasty bunion procedure?

Only a Bunionplasty-certified surgeon can perform this type of bunionectomy.

Choosing your bunion surgery carefully is crucial because it directly impacts your recovery process and the long-term health of your foot, ensuring the correction is effective and minimizes potential complications.

Does insurance cover Buinionplasty?

Yes, insurance typically covers bunion surgery if it is deemed medically necessary. This usually means the bunion is causing significant pain, difficulty walking, or other related health issues.
