A fall at any age can be distressing and result in serious injury or worse, but seniors are particularly in a higher risk category. Statistics highlight how common falls are among older people. In addition, the data shows the often-devastating impact falls can have on this group’s physical and mental health, not to mention their overall quality of life.
All too often, we hear about a previously healthy, independent older adult who falls and never fully recovers. In addition to fall injuries, such seniors frequently experience a loss of confidence due to the fear of falling again. Even those who have never experienced a fall may develop a fear of falling as they age. In either case, this fear may lead them to avoid simple activities such as walking, exercising, or socializing, thus reducing their independence.
To help combat these debilitating outcomes, the University Foot and Ankle Institute (UFAI) has launched its Balance and Fall Prevention Program for seniors.
