What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump where the innermost bone of the foot meets the big toe.

This visible bump by the big toe appears when the first metatarsal shifts outward so the bone protrudes on the inside of the foot near the big toe joint. Sometimes a bunion develops at the base of the little toe. When that happens, it is called a "tailor's bunion."

Bunions are one of the most common foot problems, affecting an estimated 25-33% of adults. Bunions occur the most in women and older adults.

Our bunion specialists are trained in all 44 variations of bunion surgery, including:

Forver Lapidus BunionectomyTM

Considered today's gold standards for bunion surgery.

MinVasive BunionectomyTM

A great option with the smallest incision.

Chevron Osteotomy

One of the most common bunion surgeries.

Tailor’s Bunion Surgery

Bunion surgery for a bunion of the little toe (bunionette).

Other bunion surgery options include:

    • Opening Wedge bunionectomy-bone wedge placed between 1st & 2nd metatarsals
    • Tightrope with Austin Bunionectomy-complex surgery for severe deformity
    • McBride Bunionectomy-removal of bony bump without cutting & shifting bone
    • Akin Bunionectomy is frequently performed as an adjunct procedure.

It is essential to select the right surgeon to perform the right type of bunion surgery resulting in a virtually painless recovery.

When should you have surgery? In the majority of cases, it becomes a strong option as the condition worsens and becomes regularly painful, and when desired activities are becoming limited.

Non-Invasive Bunion Correction Treatments for Sherman Oaks Residents!

Rather than ignoring it, resulting in the usual worsening of the condition, accept the fact that you have a foot bunion, and then let us help you slow the progression and reduce your discomfort using bunion correction techniques.

Our doctors and specialists are strong believers in having their patients try non-surgical options whenever possible.

Many of our patients in the Los Angeles suburbs of Sherman Oaks, Encino, Studio City, Burbank, and Van Nuys find symptom relief through the use of our conservative non-invasive bunion correction treatments:

  • Wearing comfortable shoes with a soft and wide toe box

  • Custom orthotics

  • Pads, gel sleeves, or toe spacers

  • Exercise and stretching maneuvers

  • Topical medications

  • New techniques: PRP or amniotic membrane injections

  • Ice packs

  • Over-the-counter medications: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

  • Steroid or cortisone injections used very sparingly

  • Night splints

  • Modification of activities

When you call for a consultation to learn more about the use of non-invasive bunion correction techniques, we can also provide information about our superior results achieved with Botrin Toxin treatments that require no actual cutting.
